The Lake Norman area — Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson — has spent two decades transforming from weekend lake country into one of the metro's most sought-after family destinations.
The draw is obvious. Lakeside neighborhoods, a small town main street feel in Davidson and an easy I-77 run to Uptown. As families have arrived, the school landscape has grown up with them.
Private options here are a little different from South Charlotte. Rather than one dominant cluster of large independent schools, Lake Norman offers a genuine variety — Catholic schools with strong parish communities, sizable Christian academies, two independent college prep options and a growing number of newer schools entering the market.
For most families north of Exit 23, many of the schools below are within 20 minutes; however, commute times can vary significantly depending on the time of day. Morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up on I-77 and the surrounding corridors can add considerable time to your drive. As always, we recommend driving the route at actual school drop-off time before committing to a school.

Huntersville offers the most dynamic market with a suburban and family-oriented feel — with Birkdale Village as a major mixed-use anchor and a wide range of neighborhoods from entry-level townhomes to upscale subdivisions. Cornelius offers upscale lakefront living while Davidson charms with its college town atmosphere centered around Davidson College.
-
A genuine variety of private school options, including Catholic, Christian, independent, and Montessori. Strong sense of community and outdoor lifestyle with Lake Norman, parks, and trails. More space and larger lots compared to South Charlotte — though home prices have risen significantly in recent years and the area is no longer considered significantly more affordable than Charlotte proper. Real estate ranges from newer subdivisions to lakefront properties and everything in between. Easy access to Uptown Charlotte via I-77 — approximately 20 to 40 minutes depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Great mix of Catholic, Christian, and independent school options.

Most North Charlotte private schools are along the I-77 corridor and the Gilead Road area. Commute times within the Lake Norman area generally range from 15 to 25 minutes; however, morning drop-off and afternoon pickup traffic on I-77 can add considerable time to your drive. Always drive the route at actual school drop off time before committing to a school.

Many Lake Norman families also consider Cannon School in Concord — approximately 25 to 30 minutes east via Highway 73 depending on traffic. Cannon School even offers bus transportation serving the Lake Norman area. See our Concord and Kannapolis page for more information.
Tuition here generally runs below South Charlotte's most competitive independent schools, making the Lake Norman area an attractive option for families seeking quality private education at a more accessible price point.
